Tampa Bay Weather History

Tampa Bay weather history is an interesting and important point for potential visitors to understand, as doing so ensures that visitors pack seasonally appropriate clothing.

Tampa Bay climate

Tampa Bay has a subtropical climate. This means that the summers tend to see high humidity and temperatures, while winters are cooler and dryer. Unlike a tropical climate, where it never freezes, the Tampa Bay area typically sees a freeze every two to three years. Two-thirds of the area's rain falls between June and September and rain is frequently delivered by afternoon thunderstorms. Although it has a reputation for searing heat, Tampa Bay does not get as hot as most of Florida. Since records began, the temperate has not ever reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit in actual temperature. Highs typically range from 65 to 95 degrees year round. Consequently, it is possible to wear comfortable clothing year round.

Tropical storms

Tampa Bay is occasionally hit by tropical storms and hurricanes. June through November is hurricane season in the North Atlantic. While at least some tropical weather affects the Tampa Bay area each year, direct hits are fairly uncommon. A hurricane landfall has not affected Tampa Bay since 1946, and the area has not seen a direct hit since 1921. In this regard, Tampa Bay is fortunate. Many areas of Florida suffer from frequent storms.

Tampa Bay's climate is much more moderate than many suspect. The yearly high is usually under 95 degrees, which low highs in the mid 60s. Unlike other portions of Florida that are frequently hit directly with hurricanes, Tampa Bay has not experienced a direct hurricane hit in almost 100 years. With that in mind, visitors to Florida should pack summer clothing and not worry too much about clothes for harsh storms.
